This report analyses the humanitarian crisis in southern Bolívar – the result of an escalation of violence driven by territorial disputes among non-state armed groups (NSAGs) over strategic corridors and illegal economies, especially with gold mining gaining increased prominence in recent years.

Between 6–11 January 2026, clashes between Syrian government forces and the Kurdish non-state armed group Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Ash Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyeh neighbourhoods of Aleppo killed 23 people and displaced 148,000.

Hurricane Melissa, which began as a tropical storm on 21 October 2025, has rapidly intensified since forming in the Caribbean and evolved into a major Category 5 hurricane with sustained winds of around 280km/h, effectively jumping four levels in 24 hours. 

Hurricane Melissa takes place during a particularly severe storm season. Since May 2025, the NOAA has forecast an above-average hurricane season, predicting between 13–19 named storms with winds of 39mph or higher. 

In 2025, armed violence in the Nueva Prosperina district of Guayaquil escalated to critical levels, with the highest increase seen in the number of homicides. Between January–August 2025, 474 homicides were recorded, representing a 112% increase.
