Since December 2023, the northern region of Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province has seen an escalation in attacks characterised by violence towards civilians and damage to houses, churches, schools, and health centres. Increased insurgency erupted across the north of the province, with reports of non-state armed groups (NSAGs), including Islamic State Mozambique (ISM), engaging in violent confrontations with security forces in various districts. 

This report analyses the current situation of child recruitment and use by NSAGs and organised crime groups in the Colombian departments of Antioquia, Chocó, and Norte de Santander.

Since 26 February 2024, heavy snow and rainfall have affected most of Afghanistan’s provinces, resulting in casualties, widespread service disruptions, infrastructure breakdowns, and significant livestock losses.

On 29 February 2024, Zambia declared a national emergency as a result of a prolonged drought. As at 1 March, the drought was affecting 84 of the 116 districts across Zambia’s Central, Copperbelt, Eastern, Lusaka, Northwestern, Southern, and Western provinces. Climate change and El Niño are driving such drought conditions.

As at December 2023, El Niño-related drought had already affected 15 of Guatemala’s 22 provinces. Drought and high temperatures are projected to continue through May 2024. Effects may be particularly severe in Guatemala’s Dry Corridor.

Around 1.61 million individuals have crossed into neighbouring countries.

In 2023, Haiti saw a significant increase in gang violence. Gangs killed an estimated 4,800 people, over twice the number of victims recorded in 2022. Many were killed by gunshots fired during violent clashes.

Vichada department is facing a critical food security crisis, with climate change and the El Niño phenomenon affecting local food production and availability. Poor infrastructure, hindering access to public services, and the reliance on traditional farming methods, hampering farmers’ ability to sell their produce and generate income, have deepened the crisis. 

People in Gaza are facing extreme challenges in meeting their basic needs, including food, because of significant access constraints stemming from insecurity. At the same time, these constraints are preventing humanitarian responders from reaching the affected population.
