This report aims to identify the most important contextual developments in Ukraine and provide an anticipatory level of analysis. It includes an outlook into how the current dynamics can develop and on potential risks that could further deteriorate the situation of the affected population. 

This short note provides a general overview of the configuration of the four major armed groups engaged in dialogue and negotiations with the Colombian government. It aims to give a glimpse of the complexity of these structures and the different challenges facing the negotiation process. This note is meant to provide additional information and support the Colombia Risk Analysis Update.

In 2022, the armed conflict in Colombia worsened and led to increased levels of violence that affected at least 12 departments, most notably in the Pacific region and along the borders with Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela. In November 2021, ACAPS identified five risks to the humanitarian context in Colombia, published an overview report, and then produced an update in March 2022 looking at the second half of the year. This risk update is designed to be read in conjunction with the above mentioned reports. 

Since November 2022, Gaza has been experiencing intermittent heavy rainfall that has accumulated in Israeli-controlled dams and reservoirs near the Gaza Strip. Between 24–26 December 2022, Israeli authorities opened dam gates and levees along the perimeter fence east of Gaza, flooding the central and southern areas of the Gaza Strip with accumulated rainwater.

This report presents the key drivers of migration and highlights the risks faced while in transit in four countries of Central America: El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Although there are commonalities in the four countries, the report highlights and provides some outlook into each country’s specific situation in terms of humanitarian constraints and needs.

This brief draws from a rapid review of recently published reports by leading organisations on the Afghan economy, including the World Bank, UNDP, and the Afghanistan National Statistics and Information Authority. Eight experts on the Afghan economy were interviewed, with a focus on economic outlook scenarios and key economic constraints.

Clashes between the Teke and Yaka communities over a land dispute have displaced more than 48,000 people in Kwango, Kwilu, and Mai-Ndombe provinces since 24 July. More than 180 people have died since the violence began. 

The YETI bimonthly economic update aims to provide a quick overview of the main economic trends in Yemen, including commodities prices, exchange rate, food and fuel imports volumes and major contextual events. It is based on data included in the YETI dashboard and follows its module structure.

During 2022-2023 winter season, six million people across Syria will be in urgent need of winter assistance, an increase of 28% from the 2021 figure. The winter weather is expected to compound the existing humanitarian needs of displaced people affected by over ten years of crisis.

The December 2022 analysis found that, between July and the end of October 2022, crisis-affected populations in more than 80 countries were not receiving the humanitarian assistance they needed because of access constraints. Gambia, Papua New Guinea, and Sri Lanka have entered the ranking since the last release.

The spotlight on social impact in Afghanistan is a series of reports that provides a pulse on intersectional vulnerabilities experienced by Afghans during a given period.

Since March 2022, Malawi has been experiencing the largest cholera outbreak reported in the last decade. Malawi needs medical supplies, vaccines, health worker training, and awareness campaigns on cholera to tackle the outbreak. People lack clean water and access to hygiene and sanitation. 

In September 2021, the Kenyan President declared drought as a national disaster. As at July, the drought had affected 23 arid and semi-arid land counties out of the total 47 counties in the country. 4.4 million people are projected to face acute food insecurity at Crisis (IPC Phase 3) or worse food insecurity levels in these 23 counties between October–December 2022.

Since June 2022, heavy monsoon rainfall has led to an unprecedented crisis in Pakistan, causing floods, flash floods, and landslides. The disaster has significantly affected southern and central Pakistan, mostly affecting Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Sindh provinces . 

Since March 2022, the armed group March 23 Movement (M23) has been launching offensives in North Kivu. The conflict is particularly affecting Rutshuru territory in North Kivu, which is close to the border with Rwanda and Uganda. The fighting escalated on 26 October, resulting in large-scale displacement.
 

On 21 November 2022, an earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Ritcher scale occurred at a depth of 10km in the West Java province of Indonesia. The earthquake has damaged at least 56,300 houses and has displaced around 61,000 people. At least 58,000 people are living in shelters.

This technical note outlines the key challenges the ACAPS team faced while analysing and comparing data across multiple MSNAs. It also aims to encourage assessment designers and coordinators to consider the future use of their data with the immediate requirements, even as they seek to improve data collection or overcome changes based on the context of the people in need. 

The SIMP report identifies events and themes emerging from information on Yemen between July–September 2022 that have had or are likely to have a social impact. It aims to support the understanding of the groups and categories of people in Yemen facing the greatest challenges in meeting needs and those most vulnerable to protection concerns.
