Haiti: humanitarian impact of gang violence

This report highlights the humanitarian impact of the recent increase in gang violence in Haiti. Since our last publication, while several other drivers have deteriorated, such as the cholera outbreak or the high cost of living, gang violence has further increased, worsening the severity of the insecurity and displacement crises.

Impact of Cyclone Mocha

On 14 May 2023, the extremely severe cyclonic storm Mocha made landfall between Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh and Kyaukpyu township in Myanmar. The cyclone caused significant damage to critical infrastructure, houses, and shelters in western and northern Myanmar, and in Bangladesh’s southeastern Chattogram division.

Sudan crisis: consequences for Ethiopia

Since 15 April 2023, intense fighting has been occurring in the capital Khartoum and other parts of the Sudan. The heavy fighting has resulted in forced displacement into neighbouring countries, including Ethiopia, and will have broader implications for conflict in the region.

India: conflict in Manipur state

On 3 May 2023, the Kuki tribal group held an organised protest march in the northeastern Indian state of Manipur against the majority Meitei community being recognised as a Scheduled Tribe. The march resulted in violent clashes with the Meitei non-tribal group. Various sources indicate that an estimated 30,000–45,000 people have been forced to flee.

Palestine: escalation of violence in Gaza

On 9 May 2023, Israel launched air raids on several areas across the Gaza Strip, with claims to target members of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) movement. On 13 May, a ceasefire was declared between the Israeli authorities and PIJ. The destruction of homes and safety concerns had displaced more than 1,200 Palestinians and about 3,000 housing units have been reported as damaged, severly damaged or totally destroyed.

South Sudan: conflict-related displacement

As at 14 May 2023, the conflict that began on 15 April in Sudan had displaced more than 57,000 people to South Sudan. 90% of this number were conflict-displaced South Sudanese returnees. The majority of the displaced are settling in border towns in Upper Nile state.

Rising violence, insecurity, and protection concerns in Cox’s Bazar refugee camps

There are about 931,000 registered Rohingya refugees living in the camps of Ukhia and Teknaf upazilas in Cox’s Bazar. Nearly 30,000 registered Rohingya refugees have been relocated and are living in houses in Bhasan Char, an island off the Bangladeshi coast.

Chad: influx of refugees from Sudan

As at 1 May 2023, at least 30,000 people were reported to be displaced to Ouaddai, Sila, and Wadi Fira provinces in Chad because of military clashes in Tandulti area in Ag Geneina locality and Foro Baranga town in West Darfur state, Sudan.

Myanmar: Update on post-coup humanitarian situation

Since then, the country has been in a state of emergency, which was extended for an additional six months on 31 January 2023.

Two earthquakes hit southern Türkiye on 6 February 2023, affecting Hatay province. As at 8 April, the province had recorded over 22,000 deaths from the earthquakes, the highest reported across the 11 earthquake-affected provinces in Türkiye. Shelter needs remain an urgent priority.

Two earthquakes hit southern Türkiye on 6 February 2023, affecting Adiyaman province. As at 6 March, a total of 307,000 people were reported to be displaced in the province. As the temperatures are gradually starting to rise, WASH needs are expected to increase.

Panama: Increase in migrant traffic through the Darien Gap

Between January and 13 April 2023, an estimated 100,000 people crossed the Darien Gap. This figure represents about six times the number of people who crossed during the same time period in 2022. If this trend continues, UNHCR and IOM estimate that by the end of the year, around 400,000 people would have passed through this region.

Sudan: conflict

On 15 April 2023, a violent power struggle broke out in Sudan’s capital of Khartoum. As at 18 April, at least 200 people were dead, and 1,800 were injured. The violence has led to the closure of hospitals and movement restrictions ordered by the army across Khartoum.
