Burkina Faso: Conflict-induced displacement

The security situation in Burkina Faso is deteriorating, with increased activity from armed groups. Conflict and climatic shocks, combined with socioeconomic inequalities, have aggravated the access of affected people to food, water, and essential services. An estimated 4.7 million people are expected to need humanitarian assistance in 2023.

Tanzania: Refugee influx from the Democratic Republic of Congo

More than 2,600 refugees and asylum seekers from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) entered Tanzania between 5–14 March to flee from the escalation of clashes between the March 23 Movement (M23) and the Congolese army in Kivu region. The immediate needs reported are food, WASH, shelter, and healthcare.

Türkiye: Floods

On 14 March 2023, only five weeks after two earthquakes struck southeastern Türkiye, severe flooding hit the southern provinces of the country. The most affected areas were Adiyaman and Sanlıurfa, which also suffered from the earthquakes on 6 February.

Mozambique: Flooding in the central provinces

On 11 March 2023, Cyclone Freddy made its second landfall as a severe tropical cyclone on Mozambique’s Zambezia province. It brought heavy rains across Manica, Niassa, Sofala, Tete, and Zambezia provinces, affecting more than 250,000 people.

State of Palestine: Violence in Huwara, Westbank

Since 26 February 2023, there has been an increase in violence against Palestinian citizens in Huwara, a Palestinian town located in Nablus governorate, northern West Bank. On 26 February, more than 400 Israeli settlers stormed Huwara and three surrounding villages, vandalising and torching 75 houses and more than 100 cars of Palestinian residents in what has been described as a ‘pogrom’ by an Israeli commander overseeing the West Bank.

Côte d’Ivoire: Displacement from Burkina Faso

Insecurity and attacks from non-state armed groups in Burkina Faso have reportedly forced entire villages to flee, with many crossing the border into neighbouring Côte d’Ivoire to seek safety. According to the National Security Council of Côte d’Ivoire, as at 2 Feburary, roughly 8,700 people from Burkina Faso had newly sought refuge in the country.

Syria/Türkiye: Update on the impact of earthquakes

One month after the earthquakes that hit Türkiye and Syria on 6 February 2023, recovery response is still underway. The earthquakes severely affected northwestern Syria, where about 4.5 million people live. In Türkiye, the most affected provinces are Adana, Adıyaman, Diyarbakır, Elazıg, Gaziantep, Hatay, Kahramanmaras, Kilis, Malatya, Osmaniye, and Sanlıurfa, where about 14 million people reside, including 1.8 million Syrian refugees.

Vanuatu: the impact of cyclones Judy and Kevin

Between 1–3 March 2023, a rare double cyclone event occurred involving two category 4 tropical cyclones, Judy and Kevin, hitting Vanuatu. Early estimates by local government authorities indicate that the cyclones have affected approximately 250,000 people, equivalent to more than 80% of the population.

Djibouti: Drought

In Djibouti, drought is affecting around 200,000 people. The current drought started in 2020 and has continued with five below-average rainy seasons. As at October 2022, about 72,000 people, including 29,000 children, were in need of humanitarian assistance as a result of the drought. The crisis has displaced approximately 6,000 people.
