Brazil: Floods in Bahia and Minas Gerais

Because of a meteorological phenomenon known as the South Atlantic Convergence Zone, the Brazilian states of Bahia and Minas Gerais have been experiencing heavy rainfall since early December. The rains have caused flooding in 164 municipalities in Bahia and 341 in Minas Gerais. As at 25 January, more than 965,000 people in both states are affected.

Pakistan: Floods

Heavy rainfall, heavy snowfall, and sub-zero temperatures hit Balochistan province between 4–10 January, causing flash floods and landslides. The floods affected over 17,300 people in 41 villages within the Gwadar district and damaged or destroyed more than 500 houses.

Colombia: Violence in Arauca department

On 2 January 2022, confrontations began in rural areas along Arauca River on the Colombia-Venezuela border. As at 24 January, the Colombian Government and humanitarian organisations recorded 36 people killed, around 1,530 IDPs, 21 families displaced from Venezuela, and at least five indigenous communities still affected by confinement.

Peru: Earthquake in the Amazon region

On 28 November 2021, an earthquake occurred in the district of Barranca, Datem del Marañón province, department of Loreto. Over 5,100 houses, 518 schools, and 71 hospitals were affected. The earthquake has destroyed several roads and caused the Utcubamba River to overflow.

Colombia: Floods in the department of La Guajira

With a landscape of majorly clay loam soil, La Guajira is a department where increased rainfall frequently leads to flooding.
