The Philippines: Impact of Tropical Cyclone Trami (Kristine) and Kong-rey (Leon)

By 11 November, Trami and Kong-rey had affected over 9.6 million people in 17 of the country’s 18 regions. By 12 November, there were nearly 893,000 people in humanitarian needs. By 31 October, a total of 160 cities and municipalities across the country had declared a state of calamity.

On 20 July 2024, Typhoon Prapiroon (Butchoy) brought heavy rains to several of the Philippines’ municipalities, marking the beginning of the southwest monsoon (Habagat), followed by the more devastating ‘super’ Typhoon Carina (Gaemi) on 21 July.

On 15 December 2021, tropical depression Twenty-Eight intensified over the western Pacific into typhoon Rai (locally known as Odette). Over 780,000 people were affected by the typhoon and have received some form of support or assistance. 400,000 people require urgent relief and long-term support.

Philippines: Taal volcano

On 1 July, a phreatomagmatic eruption was recorded from the main crater of the Taal Volcano, approximately 70km south of central Manila. High levels of volcanic sulfur dioxide emissions and steam-rich plumes were generated from the main crater. The Taal Volcano island is currently considered a danger zone.

Philippines: Typhoon Goni

On the morning of 1 November 2020, Typhoon Goni (known locally as Rolly) made landfall in Bicol Region and hit the town of Tiwi in Albay province, causing rivers to overflow and flood much of the region. The typhoon – considered the world’s strongest typhoon so far this year – had maximum sustained winds of 225 km/h and gustiness of up to 280 km/h, moving at 25 km/h.

915,000 people are recorded as affected. There are more than 88,000 persons taking temporary shelter in 577 evacuation centres. Typhoon destroyed about 17,400 houses and damaged 206,800. Damages of infrastructures and agriculture have been reported.

Typhoon Kammuri (Tisoy in the Philippines) made landfall in Eastern Philippines, on 3 December. Early reports indicate that Eastern Visayas and Bicol region have been particularly damaged, with destroyed houses and extreme flood warnings issued.

On 19 September, the Philippine Department of Health declared a national outbreak of polio following the confirmation of a polio case reported in Lanao del Sur province. As of 8 October 2019, there are two confirmed polio case after a second child from Laguna province has been diagnosed with polio.

Philippines: Tropical Storm Tembin

On 22 December tropical storm Tembin hit Mindanao island in the Philippines, affecting more than 715,000 people. More than 138,000 people remain displaced. Lanao del Norte and Lanao del Sur provinces in Mindanao were severely impacted with 41,000 and 59,000 affected people respectively. Shelter and NFI needs are high.

Philippines: Displacement from Marawi City

Since fighting broke out on 23 May in Marawi City, Lanao del Sur, displacement has occurred from Marawi City and the neighbouring Marantao municipality. As of 22 June, more than 294,000 people were still displaced, around 16,000 of whom were hosted in evacuation centres.

Since 23 May, fighting has erupted in Marawi city, Lanao del Sur on Mindanao island. As of 1 June, over 100,000 IDPs have been registered by the regional authorities since 23 May but up to 90% of the 201,000 residents of Marawi are estimated to have fled.

Early on 20 October 2016, typhoon Haima/Lawin is due to hit the Philippines. 11.6 million people could be affected, mostly in northern Luzon – including 2.8 million in the Cagayun and Isabela provinces, where it will hit the hardest.
