On 10 September 2023, Storm Daniel made landfall in Libya, causing heavy rainfall, flash floods, and strong winds. It affected coastal towns and cities in the northeast of the country. As of 13 September, around 5,300 people have been killed and 10,000 people remained missing.

In April 2019, conflict between the Libyan National Army aligned to the government in the east and the opposing UN-backed Government of National Accord, based in the northwest of Libya, escalated in and around the capital Tripoli. ACAPS and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies have produced a new set of Central and West Mediterranean migration scenarios, outlining possible developments in migration via Libya, Italy, Spain and other transit countries over the next six months.
