The SIMP report identifies events and themes emerging from information on Yemen between July–September 2022 that have had or are likely to have a social impact. It aims to support the understanding of the groups and categories of people in Yemen facing the greatest challenges in meeting needs and those most vulnerable to protection concerns.

This report provides an overview of the main protection concerns in Colombia. It exposes the main threats of armed conflict and its differentiated impact on the population. It presents by population group the community’s coping mechanisms and reactive responses to mitigate, adapt to, and recover from the various protection threats they are exposed to.

Somalia has seen a threefold increase in extreme weather events over the last 40 years. As at October 2022, four consecutive failed rainy seasons had resulted in a drought already worse in duration and severity than previous droughts in 2010–2011 and 2016–2017. 

This report aims to provide a comprehensive comparison of access challenges across different oblasts in Ukraine to inform humanitarian responders and support decision-making. This analysis is based on a severity model that ACAPS developed using data collection from secondary sources publicly available as at 31 October 2022, complemented by 17 key informant interviews. 

On 20 September 2022, the Ugandan health authorities declared an Ebola outbreak after the confirmation of one case in Madudu subcounty of Mubende district. As at 7 November, there were 135 confirmed cases and 53 associated deaths.

This report provides an overview of key conflict events over the past two years and the humanitarian situation in terms of displacement, priority needs, and access. It also sheds light on food-related coping strategies in northern Ethiopia.

On 12 October, the US Department of Homeland Security announced joint actions with Mexico to create a more orderly and safe immigration system for Venezuelans. This aims to reduce the number of people arriving at the southwestern US border. At the same time, the number of stranded people unlikely to reach their destination is increasing, and the response capacity is overwhelmed.

Between January–September 2022, more than 150,000 people crossed into Panama from Colombia through the Darién Gap. Although migrants have historically used the Darién route to reach Central America, the flow of migrants through this route considerably increased between 2021–2022. 

Haiti is currently facing a deteriorating humanitarian situation. A combination of sociopolitical unrest and insecurity, fuel shortages, and a long-term declining economy has resulted in significant humanitarian needs for the population. 

Tropical storms and prolonged rains throughout September–October have caused riverine flooding and consequent landslides across Honduras. As at 14 October, the rainy season had affected 188,000 people, including 144,000 affected by Hurricane Julia. 
 

Since August, flash and riverine floods have been severely affecting South Sudan, as is typical during the rainy season (April–November). Most of the country had below-average rainfall in June–July. The extent of flooding more than doubled between early August and early October, from 22,000km2 of South Sudan’s landmass to 48,000km2.

Since June 2022, heavy rainfall and strong winds have been severely affecting Nigeria. As at 6 October, flooding had affected 33 of its 36 states. As at 20 October, the crisis had displaced more than 1.4 million people and affected over 2.5 million. The floods have triggered a cholera outbreak in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe.

This report aims to give an overview of the situation of migrants and asylum seekers in these areas, as well as those in transit across the country. It includes the most immediate humanitarian needs, access constraints, and information gaps.

Since 17 February 2022, armed groups affiliated with the Jama’at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin have surrounded Djibo town in Soum province, located at the border with Mali. The groups have been controlling the access routes to the city, preventing the entry and exit of people and goods. 

ACAPS’ Global Risk Analysis outlines a number of key contexts where a particular situation may notably deteriorate within the next six months, causing (a spike in) humanitarian needs.

On 8 October, category one hurricane Julia swept through La Guajira department in northeastern Colombia. The hurricane affected over 159,000 people. Uribia municipality faced the highest impact with at least 22,000 people affected as at 8 October. 

This report aims to provide an overview of the displacement and confinement situation and the differentiated impact on indigenous peoples and Afrodescendant communities observed between January–August 2022. It presents the main conflict dynamics in the subregions of Telembí, Sanquianga, and Pacífico del Sur in Nariño department.

The Ukrainian military launched a counteroffensive in Kharkiv oblast on 6 September, aiming to reclaim the northern and eastern areas of the oblast that were under Russian military control. In the following two weeks, Ukrainian forces regained control over 8,000km2 of territory with a population of around 150,000 people. The change in control has made many areas newly accessible, making humanitarian access possible. 

On 10 September 2022, the Syrian Ministry of Health announced a cholera outbreak after 15 confirmed cases and one death. By that time, at least 936 cases of severe acute watery diarrhoea and six related deaths had been identified in the country, possibly linked to the cholera outbreak. 

This biannual publication outlines key emerging risks in Afghanistan that might affect the humanitarian situation over the next six months. It aims to inform the humanitarian community of possible changes in context and humanitarian needs in Afghanistan to facilitate contingency planning, risk management, and response.
