State of Palestine: Annexation of the West Bank

In April 2020, the Israeli coalition government signed an agreement containing an article allowing the annexation of the West Bank territories. At the time of the writing of this note, the formal annexation has yet to start, despite initial plans to begin on 1 July. The potential impact of the annexation remains major for Palestinians, as was seen following the East Jerusalem annexation in 1980.

Lebanon: Explosion in Beirut, Secondary Data Review

It was developed by ACAPS, MapAction, Mercy Corps, and OCHA/UNDAC, with support from the Lebanese Red Cross and Emergency Operation Cell partners. It provides a summary of available information on priority geographic areas and sectors for response, and the main vulnerable groups within the affected population to support.

Lebanon: Explosion in Beirut

On 4 August a large explosion occurred in the port of Beirut. The blast killed over 150 people and injured over 5,000. Search and rescue teams are still deployed as many are still missing. People have lost homes and businesses, including restaurants, bars, and hotels while already facing a deep economic crisis. Up to 300,000 people might have lost their homes.

Nigeria: Banditry violence and displacement in the Northwest

A new humanitarian crisis is emerging in Nigeria’s northwest with the ongoing activities of armed groups referred to locally as ‘bandits’ in six states. Attacks have included shooting and killing, cattle rustling, kidnapping, rape, torching of entire villages, and looting of valuables, and the numbers of fatalities and displaced people have continued to rise.

The emphasis is on experiential understanding – people’s lived experiences – rather than scientifically verifiable data through a method such as testing. Mozambique: Conflict escalation in Cabo Delgado

A violent insurgency in Cabo Delgado province since 2017 has affected more than 600,000 people anddisplaced more than 200,000 across the province. More than 700,000 people are in need of humanitarian assistance as of June 2020. Conflict has escalated in 2020, with four district capitals temporarily overtaken by insurgents since March.

Nepal: COVID-19 & the return of migrants

Many migrant workers, most of them from Nepal, lost their employment when the Indian governmentimposed a strict lockdown on 25 March to contain the spread of COVID-19. With theeasing of the lockdown, 600,000 migrant workers are expected to return to Nepal in the coming weeks andmay weaken the effectiveness of Nepal’s COVID-19 mitigation measures.

Yemen Scenarios: End of Saudi financial support

These scenarios were developed in January 2020 through team mapping and analysis exercises by four Yemen researchers, validated through interviews with key stakeholders. The draft report was further developed and revised on the basis of a literature review, rounds of extensive revision and input from ACAPS economists. Subsequently, as the Saudi deposit to CBY Aden depleted, the report was updated in May 2020 to reflect the impact of COVID-19 both on Yemen and developments in south Yemen.

DRC: Ebola outbreak in Equateur province

On 31 May, Democratic Republic of Congo declared its 11th Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak (on record), in Wangata health zone, in the southern part of Mbandaka city, capital of Equateur province and in the city’s surrounding area, and Bikoro. Given Mbandaka is a major river port with significant connections to other parts of the DRC, there is risk of spread to other areas of DRC if tracing does not identify all cases and prevent further contamination.
