Cameroon: COVID-19 outbreak

Cameroon has 54 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Central Region, Littoral Region and West Region as of 23 March 2020. Cameroon’s Ministry of Public Health has developed a preparedness plan for COVID-19, including active surveillance at points of entry, in-country diagnostic capacity at the national reference laboratory, and designated isolation and treatment centres.

Yemen: Escalation of conflict in Al-Jawf and Marib

Since the beginning of 2020 violence has been increasing across multiple locations in Yemen. At the end of February Houthi forces made significant gains in Al Jawf governorate, including taking control of Hazm, the provincial capital. As of mid-March, Houthi forces continue to advance on Marib governorate to the east. This potentially opens a new frontline and if successful in holding newly captured territory, may shift the balance of power more into the hands of Houthis.

COVID-19 is yet to be confirmed in Yemen, however, the likelihood of its spread is high as cases in surrounding countries continue to grow. The country’s infrastructure has been devastated by five years of conflict, leaving little capacity to respond. Only 51% of health centres are fully functional. There is limited medicine, equipment and personal protection equipment available and only two testing sites.

Parliamentary and municipal elections scheduled for 9 February 2020 are intensifying an escalation of the Anglophone crisis in Cameroon. On 7 January 2020, fighters from the Ambazonian separatist group burned down the Elections Cameroon office in Misaje commune, Donga Mantung division in Northwest region. The action was to reiterate their earlier decision not to participate in legislative and municipal council elections scheduled for 9 February 2020.

Between 31 December 2019 and 1 January 2020, the Northeast monsoon brought rainfall to Indonesia leading to heavy flooding across the Greater Jakarta area.14,000 people were reportedly displaced on the 8 January, down from previous days' estimates. The displaced are spread across 60 emergency shelters.

This study found that individuals and households often experience multiple vulnerabilities at once, and that being vulnerable in one way often leads to another form of vulnerability, resulting in an inescapable and vicious circle. The study was based on the premise that understanding the reasons for, and implications of, vulnerability beyond the typical humanitarian categories, should help humanitarian agencies provide a more nuanced response to needs, based on evidence.

A series of violent attacks against civilians in Beni city and Beni territory in North Kivu province in November has triggered mass displacement across the territory with an unconfirmed number of people fleeing to Beni city. In response to the attacks, residents in Beni began protesting the lack of protection on 22 November. Several organisations have announced the evacuation of staff from Beni until calm is restored.
