Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia are currently experiencing one of the worst droughts in 60 years. The current drought is driving significant levels not only of food insecurity but also of WASH, health, and nutrition needs for the affected population.

This report aims to support humanitarian responders and policymakers in better understanding the Interim Taliban Authority (ITA) decision-making. To improve humanitarian planning and preparedness, it is crucial to understand the motivations behind the trajectory of ITA policy and possible triggers behind their decisions.

Between January and 13 April 2023, an estimated 100,000 people crossed the Darien Gap. This figure represents about six times the number of people who crossed during the same time period in 2022. If this trend continues, UNHCR and IOM estimate that by the end of the year, around 400,000 people would have passed through this region.

On 15 April 2023, a violent power struggle broke out in Sudan’s capital of Khartoum. As at 18 April, at least 200 people were dead, and 1,800 were injured. The violence has led to the closure of hospitals and movement restrictions ordered by the army across Khartoum.

More than 2,600 refugees and asylum seekers from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) entered Tanzania between 5–14 March to flee from the escalation of clashes between the March 23 Movement (M23) and the Congolese army in Kivu region. The immediate needs reported are food, WASH, shelter, and healthcare. 

On 14 March 2023, only five weeks after two earthquakes struck southeastern Türkiye, severe flooding hit the southern provinces of the country. The most affected areas were Adiyaman and Sanlıurfa, which also suffered from the earthquakes on 6 February. 

ACAPS’ Global Risk Analysis outlines a number of key contexts where new crises may emerge or where a particular situation may notably deteriorate within the next six months, causing a spike in humanitarian needs.

On 11 March 2023, Cyclone Freddy made its second landfall as a severe tropical cyclone on Mozambique’s Zambezia province. It brought heavy rains across Manica, Niassa, Sofala, Tete, and Zambezia provinces, affecting more than 250,000 people.

Since 26 February 2023, there has been an increase in violence against Palestinian citizens in Huwara, a Palestinian town located in Nablus governorate, northern West Bank. On 26 February, more than 400 Israeli settlers stormed Huwara and three surrounding villages, vandalising and torching 75 houses and more than 100 cars of Palestinian residents in what has been described as a ‘pogrom’ by an Israeli commander overseeing the West Bank. 

Insecurity and attacks from non-state armed groups in Burkina Faso have reportedly forced entire villages to flee, with many crossing the border into neighbouring Côte d’Ivoire to seek safety. According to the National Security Council of Côte d’Ivoire, as at 2 Feburary, roughly 8,700 people from Burkina Faso had newly sought refuge in the country. 

This report provides a snapshot of the humanitarian access situation and response capacity in northwestern Syria since 6 February, in both GCAs and NGCAs affected by the earthquakes. It is directed at informing humanitarian operational responders and decision makers to support response-planning.
