The Afghanistan Risk Overview is a biannual risk identification report outlining key emerging risks likely to affect the humanitarian situation in the country over the next six months. It aims to inform the humanitarian community of possible changes in context and humanitarian needs in Afghanistan to facilitate contingency planning, risk management, and response.

Cameroon: Increase in cholera cases

Cameroon has been experiencing a cholera outbreak since October 2021. Although the number of reported cases was relatively low between late November 2022 and March 2023, there has been a significant increase since 27 March, particularly in Centre region, making it the new epicentre of the epidemic. The epidemic has since mostly affected Centre, Littoral, South, and West regions, with new cases reported in 29 out of 58 districts countrywide.

Sudan: anticipated impacts of the 2023 rainy season

On 15 April 2023, clashes erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in multiple areas of Sudan. While multiple ceasefires have created temporary lulls in fighting, violence continues. As at 6 June, the conflict had resulted in at least 866 deaths and 6,000 injuries according to the Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH).

Colombia: Floods in Arauca department

Since the end of March 2023, rainfall has increased in the department of Arauca. During the first days of May, the rains increased the flow of the Arauca, Caño Caranal, Cusay, and Jordán Rivers, causing them to overflow into the municipalities of Arauquita and Saravena. As at 5 June, the floods had affected more than 9,700 people.

On 14 May 2023, the extremely severe cyclonic storm Mocha made landfall between Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh and Kyaukpyu township in Myanmar. The cyclone caused significant damage to critical infrastructure, houses, and shelters in western and northern Myanmar, and in Bangladesh’s southeastern Chattogram division.

On 3 May 2023, the Kuki tribal group held an organised protest march in the northeastern Indian state of Manipur against the majority Meitei community being recognised as a Scheduled Tribe. The march resulted in violent clashes with the Meitei non-tribal group. Various sources indicate that an estimated 30,000–45,000 people have been forced to flee.

On 9 May 2023, Israel launched air raids on several areas across the Gaza Strip, with claims to target members of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) movement. On 13 May, a ceasefire was declared between the Israeli authorities and PIJ. The destruction of homes and safety concerns had displaced more than 1,200 Palestinians and about 3,000 housing units have been reported as damaged, severly damaged or totally destroyed.

As at 14 May 2023, the conflict that began on 15 April in Sudan had displaced more than 57,000 people to South Sudan. 90% of this number were conflict-displaced South Sudanese returnees. The majority of the displaced are settling in border towns in Upper Nile state.

There are about 931,000 registered Rohingya refugees living in the camps of Ukhia and Teknaf upazilas in Cox’s Bazar. Nearly 30,000 registered Rohingya refugees have been relocated and are living in houses in Bhasan Char, an island off the Bangladeshi coast.
