Since 2014, the Eastern Mediterranean migration route has been an important pathway for refugees, asylum seekers, and migrants crossing to Europe from the Middle East, Asia, and Africa. Migration along the eastern Mediterranean route peaked in 2015 when more than 850,000 people arrived in Greece after passing through Turkey.?Though new arrivals have decreased in recent years, they still remain significant. Between January and December 2019, approximately 67,000 people arrived in Greece by land and sea via the Eastern Mediterranean route. During the same period, the most common countries of origin were Afghanistan, Syria and the Democratic Republic of Congo.?
Humanitarian needs remain elevated among refugees, migrants, and asylum seekers along the Eastern Mediterranean migration route. Many people end up spending prolonged periods in overcrowded camps and displacement centers in Greece and Turkey, and are otherwise unable to continue their onward journey to other destinations in Europe. ?In Turkey, host community attitudes have been hardening towards refugees, migrants, and asylum-seekers, and discrimination has reportedly increased in recent years. ?
