The critical importance effectively engaging of communities through an understanding of their cultural needs was identified through reflections on lessons learned from Ebola responses. An epidemic is impossible to contain in a humanitarian silo, without considering the behaviours of people, which change based on their perceptions of humanitarian services and are a critical factor in the trajectory of the outbreak. A successful epidemic response will make the people it aims to serve agents of the response effort.
