In 2015, over 856,000 refugees, asylum-seekers, and other migrants arrived in Greece. 730 people died on the eastern Mediterranean route. The initial response to the surge in arrivals was reactive and poorly coordinated. FYRo Macedonia declared a state of emergency and Greece requested additional EU aid.

The flow decreased after many destination countries sealed their borders and restricted movement, and still further after the EU-Turkey deal in which asylum seekers arriving in Greece could be returned to Turkey. In 2016, 173,000 people arrived by sea in Greece - 20% of the previous year’s total.

However asylum seekers and other migrants continue to face significant humanitarian needs en route to and within Europe in 2017. People are attempting more dangerous and more covert routes, increasing their exposure to protection risks and constraining their access to basic services

Since 2016, ACAPS has been a partner in the Mixed Migration Platform, a joint information management and exchange initiative focused on mixed migration to, from, and within the Middle East. In 2015/2016, ACAPS ran a project analysing the needs of people travelling through the Balkans.

ACAPS Projects

Mixed Migration Platform

The Mixed Migration Platform (MMP) is a joint NGO initiative providing mixed migration information for policy, programming and advocacy work, as well as critical information for people on the move. The platform focuses on the people, countries, routes, and inherent risks associated with irregular migration, which includes refugees, asylum seekers, trafficked persons, economic migrants, and other groups of forcibly and/or voluntarily displaced persons. ACAPS contributes to the MMP with analytical capacity, scenario-building expertise, and online data collection and analysis.

Balkans

ACAPS and MapAction launched a project to provide comprehensive and timely analysis of the humanitarian situation of asylum-seekers, migrants and refugees who transit through the Western and Southern Balkans, specifically Greece, FYRo Macedonia, Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia.

Scenarios, analysis, maps and other visuals provide regular comparative analysis of the situation in these countries to inform both strategic and immediate operational decision-making. The project was funded through the Start Network.
