Secondary Data Reviews In the last two months, three Secondary Data Reviews (SDR) were released by ACAPS: Niger, Cambodia and DPRK. The SDRs have been produced in partnership with CaLP, ECB Project, infoasaid and MapAction. New technical brief: Purposive Sampling and Site Collection This document provides guidance on how to select relevant groups and identify the most appropriate sites to assess in phase II (first two weeks following a disaster). New Videos on Needs Assessments Two new videos on needs assessment by Richard Garfield from Colombia University are online: Analysis of information in humanitarian emergencies and Pre-crisis information. Four other videos are already online: Three keys for humanitarian needs assessments, What we need to know about disasters, Qualitative and quantitative methods, Lessons learned from Pakistan floods. |

Report on Field Data Collection for Needs Assessments, Horn of Africa The ECB project and ACAPS organized two trainings in “Field Data Collection for Humanitarian Needs Assessments” for local NGO staff working for both international and local NGOs in Somalia. Due to high interest and large number of applicants, the ECB project and ACAPS are planning to organize additional trainings in Somalia in the coming months. Other Collaborations on Training In December 2011, ACAPS will form part of the facilitation team for OCHA’s workshop on the Operational Guidance for Coordinated Assessments in Humanitarian Crises. ACAPS is currently developing tailored assessment modules for partners including MapAction and the protection cluster. The project will also deliver MapAction’s two day assessment training in January 2012. Upcoming Training for ACAPS Roster Members ACAPS is organising a training for its roster members from 16-20 January 2012 in Geneva. The course will focus on exchanging ideas and experiences and learning about the latest developments in assessment methodologies, tools and good practice. This is only open to ACAPS roster members who will receive their invitations by the end of November. |

Upon request from OCHA, in October ACAPS seconded an Information Analyst to Cambodia to support the consolidation of information relating to needs and to the relief response. ECB and ACAPS Collaboration on Joint Needs Assessments ACAPS is working together with the ECB project to strengthen joint needs assessments in various contexts. Current collaboration is ongoing in: Bangladesh, Bolivia, Indonesia and Horn of Africa. Ongoing and Future Deployments An assessment expert is currently facilitating inter agency assessment missions in Chad. A scoping study of emergency assessment tools and capacity in Timor Leste has been undertaken. A mission to Niger is planned for end November. |
